How I became a “New Born Shopper”

What’s in a label ? is there more to read, beyond the name of the designer ?

Literally, Yes!

Over the last days, a few Primark shoppers had the shocking surprise to discover messages sewed to the labels of their clothes. Not simple messages : real cries for help.

Remember the collapse of the clothing factory in Bangladesh last year ? where hundreds of poor people lost their lives on the altar of the fast fashion industry ? I was horrified to discover how Benetton, Zara, Mango, H&M and other Primark despised the lives of garment workers just for the sake of saving some bucks. Appalling.

I joined the Fashion Revolution movement a year after. Like millions of responsible consumers, I marked the sad anniversary of the Rana Plaza by wearing my clothes Inside out and asked the brand « who made my cloth ? »

It has became crucial to me to “see” the men and women who sew them, make sure I am not contributing to forced labor and trafficking.

I am not a quitter and I want to lead by example. Therefore, I would never give up shopping! I am now a conscious shopper, as I have learn to cherish my clothes, buy vintage, customize second hand, buy quality versus quantity… My new shopping attitude has boosted my creativity (ok, still work in progress) and it feels good knowing how the clothes of my family are made.
