Estelea's Blog

French Mum, humanitarian, restless explorer and doer on sabbatical in Cebu (Philippines): one Attila in each arm, I am exploring the “toddlers safe” corners of the region, while trying to keep some room for Me.

You can take the girl out of Maui..

I have been here before. I can still feel the warmth of its hugs when I close my eyes: Its turquoise arms, its sugar sandy kisses, the symphony of its waves. How the sun there embraces the air, the waters and the hills. People will even swear that Maui winds whisper love songs to their soul.

I have been here before so you can trust me. Everything they say is true.

But love was not enough. Something was missing. I felt restless, too young for Paradise. I still praised Maui but I was not in love anymore.

Serbia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Liberia, India… so far from The Island, in each and every way: darkest shades of lives, sad heavy clouds, worrying thunders. No grain of sand, mud everywhere. But all the bumpy roads drove me closer to myself.

Spending time in the darkness teaches how to appreciate the light. I have learnt to bloom wherever I am planted. My humanitarian assignments proved me that love, joy, hope and laugh can be found everywhere.

I left Maui but the Aloha Spirit is tattooed in my soul: it means blessing everyone and everything that represents what you want. Praise the good things your eyes meet, express your gratitude, bless the future so the wind may always be at your back.

Maui was my first love. We may never meet again, but I cherish our memories and will always look up to you with a smiling and thankful heart. Mahalo, old friend!
